EMAEE January 2016 Meeting - 1/12/16 at Oakland University
The East Michigan Association of Energy Engineers invites you to attend their meeting on Tuesday January 12, 2016.

Oakland University CHP Site Tour

Summary:
Oakland University CHP Site Tour
See Oakland University's new 5 MW gas turbine Combined Heat and Power (CHP) that is under construction and nearing completion. According to the university, the system is planned reduce carbon emissions by up to 50 percent, replace two 60-year-old boilers with new heating capacity, and generate enough savings to pay for itself in less than nine years. The $12M investment is being funded through a public-private partnership that does not affect the University's debt capacity.

Dinner Presentation: Transition to Clean Energy
As Michigan and our country moves away from coal fired electricity, what will our future electric supply and energy grid look like? MSU's board of trustees approved a 10 MW solar PV installation, and Oakland U is moving to Combined Heat and Power. Will solar energy be the solution, and what is Combined Heat and Power? Will we need to build more nuclear power plants? This presentation will discuss the current changes evolving our energy infrastructure such as aging coal plants, the federal Clean Power Plan, low cost/low carbon natural gas, and the falling price of solar electric energy.

By: James Leidel, Director of Clean Energy Systems
James Leidel has been involved in the energy and energy management industries since his graduation from Purdue University with a BS in mechanical engineering in 1990. From 1991 to 2001, he worked in various positions with Invensys Building Systems (formerly Barber-Colman) and Detroit Edison, followed by 10 years as Energy Manger for Oakland University's Facilities Management Department. In 2011, James helped create and launch the Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) within the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University, and took over as director. He now works to prototype and commercialize several new energy technologies as well as support OU and other organization's clean energy infrastructure needs. He has been teaching environmental science, and engineering courses as well.
